Replacing A Rotten Wooden Window Sill In Hartburn

Not every job on the books is a big one, but that doesn’t mean it matters any less to the customer. A recent exterior wooden sill repair in Hartburn is a good example of exactly that, a straightforward job carried out carefully for a customer who genuinely needed it done properly.

The property belonged to a 98 year old lady, who is also the mother of a previous customer of ours. The wooden sill on one of her windows had rotted badly in sections, and it needed sorting properly rather than patched over.

Removing A Badly Rotten Sill

Once we had a proper look at the sill, it was clear the rot had taken hold badly enough in sections that a repair wasn’t really an option. The whole sill was cut out and removed completely, rather than trying to patch around the worst of the damage, which would only have left a weaker repair that wouldn’t have lasted.

Fitting The New Sill

With the old sill removed, a new one was installed in its place. Alongside this, we cleaned off the window beading, since the paint on it had started flaking away and needed properly addressing rather than being left to get worse.

Getting It Ready For Final Painting

Once the new sill was in and the beading cleaned up, we applied two coats of primer to get everything ready for a final coat. Her son is set to do the final coat himself, so we made sure everything was properly prepared and ready for him to finish off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you repair wooden window sills, or only replace them?
It depends on the extent of the damage. Where rot has taken hold badly, as it had in this case, full replacement is usually the more reliable option rather than a patch repair.

Can you prime a sill ready for someone else to paint?
Yes, as we did here, we can prepare and prime new joinery work ready for a customer, or a family member, to apply the final coat themselves.

Do you carry out this kind of repair work in Hartburn and the surrounding area?
Yes, we carry out joinery repairs, including window sills, across Hartburn and the wider Teesside area.
